Program: The featured program speaker is Judith R. James, Ed.D. Director of Transition Programs Lord Fairfax Community College, she will be discussing the mission andpurpose of the College’s newOffice of Transitions.

About our Speaker

Dr. Judith R. James

In February 2011, Dr. Judith R. James was hiredas the director of Lord Fairfax Community College’s newOffice of Transition Programs. This newoffice oversees four (4) programs providing an expanded bridge to college foradult learners and a comprehensive array of academic preparation, careerdevelopment and other wraparound student support services to address theirunique and holistic needs.

Dr. James is also an active member of theRegional Literacy Coordinating Council (RLCC) committed to improving literacyamong adult learners within a five county region in the Northern ShenandoahValley and a member of the Board overseeing Apple Country Head Start, serving Winchester City,Frederick Countyand Clarke County.

Prior to joining LordFairfax Community College, Dr. James served as Executive Director of the Prince George’s CountyBoard of Education and Special Assistantto the Superintendent, Prince George’s County Public Schools,the 2nd largest urban school district in Marylandand the 18 largest in the nation.

Dr. James has also held progressively responsiblepositions at the national level - as a director of urban and metropolitanprograms at the National Center for HigherEducation and as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education - reviewingapplications from higher education institutions seeking federal funding toadminister programs for first generation college going students.

At the state level, Dr. James worked for Ohio'splanning and coordinating agency for public higher education - The Ohio Boardof Regents - as the director of Ohio’s statewide access and success initiativeand the Teaching Leadership Consortium -Ohio, an initiative to convene Ohio’s College of Education Deans to review thestate’s teacher preparation curriculum and recommend revisions to ensure OhioPre-K-12 teachers were prepared to achieve successful learning outcomes andclose the achievement gap among culturally and linguistically diversepopulations.

Her community college experience includesserving as the chief student affairs officer in both the Kentucky Community andTechnical College System (KCTCS) and the California Community College system.

A native of Oakland, California,she holds the following degrees: B.A. In Cultural Anthropology and Sociologyfrom Mills College(Oakland, California);M.A. In Education Administration from HolyNames University(Oakland, California)and an Ed.D in Organization and Leadership in Education from the University of San Francisco.

- We have successfully pulled off theThanksgiving day baskets for Free Medical Clinic and Healthy Families, donating45 baskets.

- We have supported the efforts of theSalvation Army by ringing the red kettle bell at JC Penny’s.

- We have solicited support this a.m.from our club to help buy gifts for Cathy’s Kids for Christmas.

- We have completed our Holiday PeanutSales drive, selling over 600 cans of peanuts!

Thanks to everyone on the committee foryour help in these endeavors. Now that we have the holiday projects behind us,it’s time to start planning the other projects we collectively decided wewanted to activate this year to support the community outreach of our club.

Golf Tournament - Ryan Oates has volunteered to chairthis event and Calvin Gant agreed to co-chair this morning. Ryan was talking toWCC to inquire about the possibility of hosting the event there and potentialcost. I hope to have details on that in the next couple of weeks. We aretentatively looking at late April or early May as the timing for this event. Iwould like to have at least 5 other volunteers to assist on a committee to helporganize this event. Please contact me and let me know if you are willing toparticipate in this activity. I would like to hold our first committee meetingbefore the Christmas holiday if possible, to lay out action items and beginplanning.

Online Auction - Wendy Longerbeam & Bill Old have agreed to co-chair this eventand I would love to have 7 or 8 people agree to join this committee as well. Weare targeting an April time frame and welcome hearing from anyone who wouldlike to help.

Downtown Pub Crawl - This event is a totally new idea that weare planning to wrap around a holiday in February. It should be a lot of funand help us raise the level of awareness of our club as well as a few dollars.Erika has agreed to Chair this event with Scott Shendow as co-chair. This shouldnot be very labor intensive or costly, but we need about 4 people toparticipate on the committee. Please contact me and let me know if you want tohelp.

Not allthieves are stupid. This gives us something to think about with all our newelectronic technology.

GPS
A couple of weeks ago a friend told methat someone she knew had their car broken into while they were at a footballgame. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the footballstadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the carincluded a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had beenprominently mounted on the dashboard.

When the victims got home, they foundthat their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anythinghad been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. Theythen used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry tothe house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knewwhat time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time theyhad to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck toempty the house of its contents.

Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it..Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find yourway home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPSwere stolen.

MOBILE PHONES

I never thought ofthis.......

This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobilephone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cellphone, credit card, wallet... Etc...was stolen.

20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him whathad happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our Pin number andI've replied a little while ago.' When they rushed down to the bank, the bankstaff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actuallyused the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold ofthe pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from theirbank account.

Moral of the lesson:

Do not disclose therelationship between you and the people in your contact list.

Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc....

And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRMby calling back

Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, besure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don'treach them, be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends' whotext you.

Club Assembly – July 12th

Committee Chairs - At the Club Assembly on July 12th at the Shelter, Committee Chairs will present a brief overview of what each committee does and committee projects.

This will give members a chance to determine whether they wish to change the committee that they have been serving on; and give new members a better feel for where they want to concentrate their efforts.

The remaining time will be devoted to committee meetings to start making plans for the coming year.

Fran Ricketts, Founder of C-CAP, Congregational Community Action Program was honored with the first “Service Above Self” award presented by the Club in its 20 year history. Club President Joe Myer thanked her for her tireless efforts to help feed families in need, throughout our community. She lives the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” every day with C-CAP.

C-CAP is one of the many organizations that the Rotary Club of Frederick has helped to support over the past 20 years. The Club makes weekly donations to C-CAP’s food pantry. C-CAP is a non-profit, charitable organization that is funded by area churches, businesses, civic groups, bequests, and private individuals. As an all-volunteer organization, C-CAP, thanks to the tireless efforts of leaders like Fran Ricketts and the support of organizations like Rotary, is able to put 97% of every dollar donated right back into the community to help support and feed families.
