By Megan Franklin, Christiansburg-Blacksburg Rotary Club #5752
The 2010 Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Speech Contest sponsored by Rotary District 7570 was held on December 3, 2010 at The Inn at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. Selected in third place was Caitlyn Petrosky from Sherando High School. She was sponsored by the Frederick County Rotary Club. The first place winner was Abigail Blair from Tunstall High School. She was sponsored by the Danville/Riverview Club. In second place was Kayleigh Roy from Stonewall Jackson High School. She was sponsored by the New Market Rotary Club. It was a record breaking year with thirty-four registered participants in the speech contest. They represented sophomores through seniors from high schools and clubs across District 7570. The purpose of the speech contest was to help teens develop the skills and responses to inform friends and family of the dangers of alcohol and drug use.
Each participant gave a 6-minute presentation focusing on the topic, persuading others to avoid the dangers and aftermath of alcohol and drug use. Judges selected finalists who then gave their speeches to students attending the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Seminar. The students judged the speech contestants on the same criteria used by the judges – delivery, content, originality and creativity.
The three winners will receive prizes of $200, $150, and $100 for first through third places respectively. They will receive their award checks at the District 7570 Conference on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at The Homestead in Hot Springs.
