Coming together in early December for the Rotary Youth Leadership Conference in Blacksburg, Virginia, about 250 teens from across the district met to interact and develop their leadership skills. The Inn at Virginia Tech provided the perfect setting for a weekend of learning, comraderie, and fun--all the elements necessary to create a memorable and impactful experience for the future leaders of our community and world.
Four Sherando High School Interact Club members attended the conference and were able to bring back to their club ideas and leadership skills that will benefit their club. Caitlin Petrosky, Timmy McGrane, Will Gaines and Tim Smart were sponsored by the Frederick County Rotary Club.
Caitlin Petrosky competed in the Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Speech Contest and placed third among her peers. This year there were more than 30 participants, the most entrants the contest has ever had.
Highlights of the weekend were meeting Miss Virginia, touring the Virginia Tech Campus, attending lectures by the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, choosing mini-leadership seminars, meeting new friends, establishing new connections, and commiting to applying their enhanced leadership abilities to reach out to others and abide by the Rotary's motto of "Service Above Self."
